March 8th Clemson Historic Picture Of The Day

Downtown Clemson In 1960’s
(Photos uploaded by Alan Cutts)

One thing that I often notice about downtown Clemson when I go through old pictures is how little Clemson’s College Avenue has changed over the years. The names of the businesses have changed, but very few buildings have been altered in a main way.

Sometimes when I look at pictures from the 60’s or 70’s, it’s hard for me to even notice that the picture is so old.

Today’s photo was taken in the early 1960’s and shows a location that has gone through several different owners in downtown Clemson. In this picture, the store is called the Clemson Shoe Service Store.
This location has always seemed to struggle to be successful throughout its history.

Its location seems to be prime, just past what is now the Subway Station and what was formerly Dan’s Sandwich Shop. It seems to me that this would be a prime location for a small restaurant or store, but it seems to sit empty more times than it is filled with a thriving business.

In the 1980’s, I believe this location was the Manifest Music Store. And at one time, it served as the back entrance to Dan’s Sandwich Shop.

The picture below was taken in 2005 and shows that the structure of the building is much the same as it was back in the 1960’s. It think this is a reason why so many people gravitate back to Clemson for their retirement. Folks can relate to the town today because it has not changed drastically (at least on campus and on College Avenue) than it did when they attended many years ago.
