April 16th Clemson Historic Picture Of The Day

Ariel Photo Of Clemson In 1940

(Photo Uploaded By Alan Cutts)

Today’s photo is an oldie, but goodie. The photo was rounded off by whomever took the photo, most likely because they put it in a photo album and tried to make it look “cute”.

Dating this picture was pretty easy because one structure was just completed and you can see it clearly in the picture. Fike Recreation Center is visable in the top right of the picture, and there is little to no landscaping features around it, hinting that it was recently completed. That would date the picture to 1940.

You can see to the left of Fike that it is open farm land during this era. Eventually, this will become Lot 2 and Memorial Stadium.

This picture also has a mystery. If you look to the left of the picture you can see Long Hall. Just beside Long Hall is a white building that looks like a house. Today, this location is an open field that separates Long Hall and Martin Hall.

I am not positive what that white building is. Someone once told me it was the old Dairy building, but I have not been able to confirm that.

Note:If you have old pictures dating before 1990 that are Clemson related and you would like to share them, send them to me in an email with as much information about the picture as you can give and I will use it for a future “Clemson Historic Picture Of The Day”).
