Today’s picture is from the winter of 1968 as Clemson Basketball played its final game inside of Fike Recreation Center.
The Tiger's last opponent in Fike was Georgia Tech on February 28th, 1968. The above photo was taken at that last game, ending a long run in the Fike gym.
Unfortunately, the Tigers lost 80-51 to the Yellow Jackets on this night. Clemson was in the midst of a 4-20 record in 1968, which included a 3-11 record in the ACC.
Richie Mahaffey, Butch Zatezalo, Tripp Jones, and Curt Eckard were prominent parts of the 1968 Tiger basketball team.
Fike was officially “built” in 1940 and served as the Tiger’s home court for 28 years.
The gym at Fike actually goes all the way back to an era prior to the depression. The photo below show the construction of the gym in 1929. In those days it was simply called the "New Field House."
(Note: If you have old pictures dating before 1990 that are Clemson related and you would like to share them, send them to me in an email with as much information about the picture as you can give and I will use it for a future “Clemson Historic Picture Of The Day”).
