Today’s photo is of Johnstone Hall from the late 1970’s.
The folks in C-6 were showing their support for the Clemson football team as they prepared for a big game against Maryland. It was not uncommon to see these types of signs hanging from the balcony of Johnstone in the 60's, 70's, and 80's.
This could have been the week leading up the Tigers’ trip to College Park, Maryland on November 18, 1978. Clemson played at Maryland with the opportunity of an ACC Title if they could beat the Terrapins on their home field.
The Tigers would win 28-24 and win the ACC Championship behind the arm of Steve Fuller and the receiving of Jerry Butler. Click below to watch highlights of the 1978 game with Jim Phillip’s voice dubbed over the video.
This win, and the words Jim Phillips used at the end of the game, ushered in the modern era of Clemson football success. Phillip’s words, captured in the video above, would become famous for Clemson followers.
Referring to the Tigers plane flight back to South Carolina after the win, Jim said, “When they arrive at Greenville/Spartanburg tonight at 7:15 they may be met by the entire state of South Carolina”.
And Jim was not too far off. Thousands of Clemson fans, some estimate close to 10,000, were waiting to greet the Tigers after their ACC Championship upon arrival in Greenville.
(Note: If you have old pictures dating before 1990 that are Clemson related and you would like to share them, send them to me in an email with as much information about the picture as you can give and I will use it for a future “Clemson Historic Picture Of The Day”).
