Today’s photo is from the 1972-1973 basketball season and shows a much different looking press area and front row of Clemson’s Littlejohn Coliseum.
As you can see from the picture, press row during this time was nothing more than a couple of tables joined together. At the right of press row, you can see the banner for WFBC. At the time, WSBF was both an AM and FM station and served as the flagship station for Clemson athletics. Rumors still persist today that WSBF used the water pipes in Johnstone Hall as their AM antenna.
You can also see in the picture that the Clemson cheerleaders wore much different outfits back in the early 1970’s! The high leg stocking and oversized pom-poms are most certainly 1970’s style!
Tiger Band also set up shop right behind press row, which I’m sure kept members of the media from dozing off during timeouts!
You can see Bob Bradley standing up and moving around press row on the left side of the picture. I believe the gentleman that is seated right below the standing Bradley is Clemson’s Athletic Director, Bill McLellan.
The Tigers went 12-14 (4-8 and tied for 4th in the ACC) during the 1972-1973 season.
The Tigers played in the Poinsettia Classic in early December against Furman and Pepperdine at the old Greenville Memorial Auditorium. The season ended for Clemson with a loss to Maryland in the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina.
(Note: If you have old pictures dating before 1990 that are Clemson related and you would like to share them, send them to me in an email with as much information about the picture as you can give and I will use it for a future “Clemson Historic Picture Of The Day”).
