A Variety Of 1970’s Photos
(Photos Uploaded By Alan Cutts)
Today’s photos are a trip through the 1970’s in Clemson. The first photo is from a late 1970’s First Friday Parade on College Avenue. The Tiger cheerleaders in the picture are riding atop a Model T Ford (I think). Also notice the hat the male cheerleader getting into the car has on. These hats were very popular in the 1960’s.
The Clemson football season kicks off each year with the annual First Friday Parade. The once a year event takes place on the Friday afternoon prior to the first home football game. Floats from various fraternities and sororities and other campus organizations are represented in the parade that rolls down main street in Clemson.
The parade culminates at the Amphitheater in the middle of campus where the first Pep Rally of the year takes place. The Grand Marshall of the Parade is featured at the Pep Rally. Recent Grand Marshall's have ranged from current PGA professional Dillard Pruitt, to College Football Hall of Fame legends Jess Neely and Frank Howard, to noted television announcers Brent Musburger and Ara Parseghian.
The next picture is from the inside of Harcombe, again in the 1970’s. Students are lining up at the salad bar in the photo, some of which are wearing bell-bottoms!
The next picture is from a location that I cannot determine and are of some female students. At the time of this picture, women were just in their 10th year being allowed to enroll at Clemson. Today, women make up the majority of students at Clemson.
This past weekend, I took a few photos from the exact locations of some of the historic pictures. Here is the picture from the 1970’s First Friday Parade on College Avenue with a recent picture from approximately the same location below it.
(Note: If you have old pictures dating before 1990 that are Clemson related and you would like to share them, send them to me in an email with as much information about the picture as you can give and I will use it for a future “Clemson Historic Picture Of The Day”).
