Covington “Goat” McMillan

(Photos Uploaded By Alan Cutts)

Today’s photo is of Covington “Goat” McMillan, who lettered at Clemson as a tailback from 1928-1929.

Above, Goat is running against South Carolina in the 1929 game where the Tigers won 21-14.

After playing football he joined the coaching staff in 1937 after coaching at Furman. He was a backfield coach until 1955 when he was made head freshman coach. Some of the players Coach McMillan coached include Banks McFadden, Jackie Calvert, Bobby Gage, and Joel Wells.

McMillan participated in seven bowl games, including the 1940 Cotton Bowl, 1949 Gator Bowl, 1951 Orange Bowl, 1952 Gator Bowl, 1957 Orange Bowl, 1959 Sugar Bowl, and the 1959 Bluebonnet Bowl.

Goat McMillan retired at the end of the 1964 season and was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame.
