Today’s photo is from 1994 and shows senior safety Darnell Stephens pressuring Maryland QB Scott Milanovich. Stephens played for Clemson from 1991-1994 under two different coaches, Ken Hatfield and Tommy West.
In 1991, Stephens had an 89-yard punt return for a score against Maryland in Death Valley, which still stands as the second longest punt return for a score in the history of Memorial Stadium.
Stephens was also a major part of the incredible comeback win over Virginia in Charlottsville in 1992. After storming to a four-touchdown lead, after whipping a sellout crowd of 44,400 into a frenzy, the 10th-ranked Cavaliers fell apart in a shocking 29-28 Atlantic Coast Conference loss to the 25th-ranked Tigers.
A huge play in the comeback came late in the game when Virginia quarterback Bobby Goodman, who had thrown four first-half touchdowns, was intercepted with a little less than four minutes to go by Darnell Stephens, who returned the ball 10 yards to the Tigers' 35.
