December 5th Clemson Historic Picture Of The Day

Dan’s Sandwich Shop And Strawberries

(Photos Uploaded By Alan Cutts)

Today’s photos are of a familiar downtown Clemson location that has gone through a few different owners. The above photo is of Dan’s Sandwich Shop in the early 1960’s when he had to move his restaurant out onto College Avenue because of a fire that took place inside the venue. Repairs took several months, and Dan continued to serve food each day from the street.

Over the years there have been many things at that location. I have heard many different stories of what the timeline was for the other establishments in this location were. Here is my best educated guess.

Before 1952, the location was called the College Café. In 1952 Dan Gentry opened Dan's Restaurant and served hamburgers as the main meal. Here is another photo of the setup of Dan’s Sandwich Shop right outside the location as repairs were being made to the inside of the restaurant after the fire in the early 1960’s.

Dan Gentry passed away in late January 1971, and his business was sold. After this Clemson landmark closed, it became the Tiger Paw Restaurant and served boxed chicken lunches for awhile but soon the kitchen closed and it was strictly a bar with a dance floor. Too many minors nabbed by ABC agents inside saw the loss of the Tiger Paw's license around 1976.

This cleared the way for The Bookstore which featured a live DJ for the disco era in downtown Clemson. When The Bookstore closed, the place was remodeled into Strawberries Restaurant, which held forth for several years in the early to mid 1980's.

The story goes that the manager of Strawberries claimed to have been robbed after closing one night but it turned out he actually stole the money and made up that story. Below is a photo of the location when it was Strawberries.

In 1986 and part of 1987 it was a bar/restaurant called Lester's Burgers & Spirits. Finally, Timbo and Dewey took it over and remade it as TD's, opening July 1, 1988.

As of the winter of 2008-2009, Dewey Browne has sold his interest in the business to Mike Collins, who is now the proprietor.
